Fairy (or more properly faerie) is the name given to a supernatural being. They are young, winged, females of small stature, normally not more than 5 to 6 inches tall. Fairies are human in appearance and have magical powers, such as the ability to fly, cast spells and to influence or foresee the future. Much of the folklore about fairies revolves about protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (fairies do not like iron and will not go near it), silver, or charms of herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs.
Their green clothing and underground homes are needed to hide and camouflage themselves from hostile humans, and their use of magic is a necessary skill for combating those with superior weaponry.
